Earth

What Earth governs

Earth is associated with late summer; a golden pause between full bloom and harvest. It’s the element of the Stomach and Spleen in Chinese medicine, which means it’s responsible for far more than just digesting food.

Earth digests everything: your meals, yes, but also your thoughts, experiences and feelings.

Physically, Earth shows up in:

  • Digestion and appetite
  • Blood sugar balance
  • Muscle tone and strength
  • Energy levels – especially the afternoon slump

Emotionally, Earth is about nourishment and connection. When it’s balanced, you feel centred, cared for and able to care for others without depleting yourself. You can receive as easily as you give.

When Earth is out of balance, that’s when life starts spinning.

Signs your Earth element needs attention

  • Worry and overthinking: the classic Earth emotion. Racing thoughts at night, replaying conversations, can’t switch off.
  • Digestive complaints: bloating, irregular appetite, cravings for sweet or stodgy food.
  • The 3pm crash: needing coffee, biscuits or something sweet to get through the afternoon.
  • Feeling scattered or ungrounded: like you’re being pulled in six directions at once.
  • Over-giving: everyone else gets fed, nurtured and listened to. You get the leftovers.
  • Comfort eating or comfort shopping, and scrolling; filling a hole that food can’t quite fill.

Who’s most affected?

In clinic, I see Earth imbalance most often in the carers and the doers. The people who hold families together, who are the listening ear for everyone, who quietly absorb everyone else’s stress. If you’re the one friends describe as “so supportive” then this element is probably working overtime for you.

We live in a culture that rewards over-giving. Earth reminds us that you can’t pour from an empty cup and that receiving isn’t weakness.

How to support your Earth element: 7 practical tips

1. Eat warm, cooked food

Cold, raw food is harder on your Earth energy. Swap the cold salad for roasted vegetables, soups, stews. Porridge over cold cereal. If your digestion grumbles, this one change alone often helps noticeably.

2. Eat without distraction

Earth is about properly digesting. Try one meal a day eaten away from screens, sitting down and chewing properly. It sounds too simple to work. It isn’t.

3. Take a 15-minute break after eating

Rest after meals lets the Stomach and Spleen do their job. A short gentle walk is also good; a stressful email marathon is not.

4. Get sweet flavour – the real kind

Earth’s natural taste is sweet. But rather than refined sugar (which depletes it further), Earth loves root vegetables, squash, roasted sweet potato, oats, dates and naturally sweet foods.

5. Create a daily anchor

Earth thrives on rhythm and routine. One regular anchor point a day – morning tea in silence, a lunchtime walk, a set bedtime – gives your nervous system solid ground to stand on.

6. Practice receiving

Next time someone offers help, take it. Ask for something once a day, however small. If receiving feels uncomfortable; that’s the sign it’s exactly what you need to practise.

7. Ground yourself, literally

Bare feet on grass, gardening, cooking with your hands, sitting under a tree. Earth energy responds to contact with the actual earth. It’s the most accessible therapy there is.

How acupuncture helps

When Earth is depleted, acupuncture works by strengthening the Stomach and Spleen channels. Restoring your body’s ability to digest food, process thoughts and generate steady energy. Clients with Earth imbalance often describe the shift as “feeling like myself again” – steadier, less worried and better able to eat and sleep.

From a Five Element perspective, we don’t just treat the symptom. We look at why your Earth went off-centre in the first place, and treat the root of it.

A little homework

Pick one tip from the list. Just one. Practice it for a week and notice what shifts.

And if worry, digestive issues or that scattered, depleted feeling have become your normal, it doesn’t have to be.
